thyssenkrupp Marine Systems Australia
thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is among the world’s leaders in the provision of global system engineering for submarines and naval surface vessels, and counts the Royal Australian Navy among its client base.
We are recognised globally as the world leader in conventional submarines and have contracted 163 submarines and associated programs to 20 countries, including 6 NATO nations, since 1960.
thyssenkrupp has created a comprehensive naval engineering capability servicing Australia’s maritime industry. Major early programs included the design (and now design support) of the RAN and RNZN ANZAC Class Frigates, and the design for the conversion that became HMAS SIRIUS.
We are system integration experts in submarines, which are one of the most complex pieces of engineering to manage, with over 350,000 parts, compared to around 100,000 parts in the Airbus A380, and just 3,000 parts in the average car.
Our HDW fuel cell plant has extended the range of submarines by 3.5 times – a massive leap in capability which enables vessels to have diving times of several weeks and travel much greater distances before having to surface. This greatly reduces the risk of discovery.
thyssenkrupp is participating in the Australian Government’s Competitive Evaluation process to design and construct the country’s next generation submarines. If successful we will introduce new digital shipbuilding technologies to Australia that will revolutionise the way these vessels are built in the future.
